- PRESS RELEASE
Damas, the leading international jewellery retailer in the Middle East, has emerged a winner at the prestigious De Beers Group Marketing Diamond Jewellery Design Competition 2007 held recently at the posh Monarch Hotel.
Gathering the most talented jewellery designers in GCC, the gala event was highlighted by the elegant presentation of never-before-seen diamond jewellery valued at over $2m.
The official entry of Damas topped the category entitled 'A Melange and Black Attraction', an imaginative and arresting neckpiece centered on the traditional Agal, the black band used in Arabic headdress. The piece features 3,635 choice diamonds and is valued at $117,463.50.
While the competition declared winners in other categories, the neckpiece from Damas stole the limelight with its innovative application of diamonds. Tamjid Abdullah remarked, "I am very thankful to De Beers for awarding Damas one of the most coveted prizes in the competition. Working with the precious stone was a rewarding experience in itself and winning an award for it is a welcome bonus."
"This modern take on a traditional icon aims to take Arabic design onto the world stage. In doing so, we hope to increase international understanding of Arabic culture in a creative way."
Meanwhile, a Damas-sponsored entry designed by Hajar Bashir Almas Faraj of The Higher Colleges of Technology won with 'A bridal diamond jewellery set' - an elegant ensemble consisting of a diamond necklace, bracelet, earrings and ring. Manufactured by Damas, the winning set makes use of 1,249 diamonds and is valued at $2.7 million.
Abdullah adds, "Credit goes to De Beers Marketing Group for the success of the event and for creating a platform where jewellery designers can interact and learn from each other."
