The 30 selected films will emphasize genre: action, comedy, drama, horror, musical, fantasy, thriller and history films that will break the mold of traditional Moroccan filmmaking, which tends to emphasize the "auteur."
Salma Chafii of ZAZA Film Productions said:
"With the 'Made in Morocco' initiative, we want to move toward a viable commercial film in Morocco such as that of other filmmaking centres like India or the United States. While we certainly have no shortage of gifted directors producing high-quality arthouse cinema, we would like to balance their output with blockbusters that will bring the box office returns required to build up a viable home-grown industry."
All 'Made in Morocco' projects will have budgets in the range of 1.2m Moroccan Dirhams ($160,000), and will be dubbed for multi-dialect distribution in Morocco, for both film and television. International sales will be handled by Salma Chafii's ZAZA Films Distribution.
