Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General of Post, who chaired two crucial sessions on 'Regional Dimension of the draft Nairobi Postal Strategy', called for a region-specific approach to postal development and urged all regional countries to work towards adopting global best practices in partnership with UPU.

Mr. Al Daboos cited Emirates Post's business practices and diversification strategies that have helped it become a regional leader. He provided glimpses into future plans, including increased presence in the freighter and cargo business, and the ambitious move to float an IPO (Initial Public Offering) which will be a regional first for a postal corporation.

Mr. Al Daboos, who was conference moderator for the session on 'Regional Dimension of the draft NPS" addressed officials from regional postal bodies, including the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications (RCC), Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal, Association of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP), Association of European Postal Operators (PostEurop), Caribbean Postal Union (CPU), Asia Pacific Postal Union (APPU) and Arab countries.

The roundtable expressed appreciation of Emirates Post hosting the UPU Strategy Conference in Dubai in November 2006, and noted its contribution towards raising standards in the region. Mr. Al Daboos lauded China Post for hosting the roundtable and hoped that the exchange of ideas would make the Nairobi Postal Strategy beneficial to all parties involved.
The China roundtable was part of seven regional meetings held over the past few months to gather the views of UPU member countries on the future sector strategy. The last one was held in New Delhi in November. Through this consultative process, some 400 participants and over 170 countries have been able to put forward their views on the future strategy.

The strategy will be implemented through the regional development plans prepared by the International Bureau for the UPU's main geographical regions and should make it possible to strengthen the postal sector as an essential element of the world economy. The UPU's four-year roadmap will be presented for adoption by member countries at the Nairobi Congress in August 2008.
