Department of Transport appoints leading consortium to help shape the future of transport in Abu Dhabi

  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, December 16 - 2007 at 11:06
  • PRESS RELEASE

The Department of Transport (DOT) in Abu Dhabi announced it awarded the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) project to Mott MacDonald and Steer Davies Gleave, a consortium consisting of two of the top 10 ranked global transport planning consultancies.

The move comes as an important part of the Abu Dhabi Government's major initiative through the Urban Planning Council known as "Plan Abu Dhabi 2030".

It realizes the forward-looking and comprehensive vision of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and the guidance and direction of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

This major project is intended to develop a comprehensive plan for surface transport - roads and road transport, bus, ferry, railway and mass transit services, as well as non-motorized transport and freight logistics - that will meet the people's and the economy's mobility needs throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi over the next quarter century.

The STMP will comprise a coordinated set of policies and a comprehensive, multi-modal transport plan for the Abu Dhabi metropolitan region, Al Ain and the Western Region, as well as for inter-regional, inter-Emirate and international passenger and freight movements. It will consist of short- and medium-range plans for the period up to 2030, each supporting Abu Dhabi Government's broader strategies and helping achieve the aims of "Plan Abu Dhabi 2030".

Commenting on this news, Mr. Faisal Ahmed Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Highways in the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi said: "The STMP study will be completed within 12 months and will be carried out in close coordination and consultation with other government bodies such as the Urban Planning Council, municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, and stakeholders such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Environment Agency, Universities and developers. With all our partners, we simply want a world-best transport system."

The STMP project will be carried out over three main phases: the first will involve an assessment of issues and options in Q1/2008; the second will evaluate these options over Q2 & Q3, providing a detailed analysis of all the impacts of alternative scenarios for managing and developing the transport system; the third and last phase carried out in Q4/2008 will set the implementation plan and timetable.
