According to a report from Strategic Analytics, in 2007 LG sold 27.7 million units by the end of the third quarter and held a dominant 21.2 per cent market share in the global CDMA market. The win further reinforces LG's position as the top supplier of CDMA handsets, a distinction it has held since 2005.

"Winning the Subscriber Technology Innovation Award for three consecutive years proved LG's leadership in the global mobile market and that LG has consolidated its presence in the CDMA market," said Mr. K.W. Kim, President - LG Electronics Middle East and Africa. "We will continue to create and lead new mobile trends with our products, based on consumer insights."

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) presented the Subscriber Technology Innovation to LG for its Voyager (LG-VX10000) handset, which was launched in the United States two months ago. The handset includes both an interactive touch-screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, making it easier to use multimedia features such as full HTML web browsing and productivity features such as e-mail. LG shared this year's award with Verizon Wireless, North America's largest CDMA carrier and the distributor for Voyager.

Dr. Byung K. Yi, Senior Executive Vice President of LG Electronics' North America Research Lab, won the CDG's CDMA Industry Leadership Award. Dr. Yi was honoured for his work on several projects researching standards for the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2), a collaborative third generation (3G) telecommunications specification-setting project.

The Subscriber Technology Innovation award, which was instituted nine years ago, is given to companies that demonstrate progressive thinking in terms of supported services and terminal design. The resulting products and services take advantage of the inherent benefits and latest technological developments of 3G CDMA, offering consumers state-of-the-art terminals in terms of both features and packaging.

CDMA Industry Leadership Award is given to the individual who has provided dynamic leadership in 3G CDMA industry activities, including contributions to standards development and the growth and evolution of CDMA.

3GPP2 was born out of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) International Mobile Telecommunications "IMT-2000" initiative, covering high speed, broadband, and Internet Protocol (IP)-based mobile systems featuring network-to-network interconnection, feature/service transparency, global roaming and seamless services independent of location.

IMT-2000 is intended to bring high-quality mobile multimedia telecommunications to a worldwide mass market by achieving the goals of increasing the speed and ease of wireless communications, responding to the problems faced by the increased demand to pass data via telecommunications, and providing "anytime, anywhere" services.
