- PRESS RELEASE
ADWC held its first College Open Day on Monday, 17th December entitled Ajiyaluna: Learning Showcase.
The overall theme of the event was to show the evolution of learning, and many of the exhibits showed how styles of teaching and learning have developed and progressed over the last several years. Parents, guardians and visitors were taken on a journey through time as they witnessed how learning was achieved prior to the electronic age, to learning styles in the present, to the infinite possibilities of how we can all learn in the future. As visitors witnessed each era, they were also able to see student projects displayed in various formats throughout the exhibit.
"The Ajiyaluna: Learning Showcase is intended to display our students' work as well as provide a bridge between parents and the campus community," noted Dr. Brad Cook, Director of ADWC. "Ajiyaluna is the Arabic word for 'our generation,' and one of the main objectives of the event is to provide a venue for parents and guardians to see student progress and to interact with faculty and staff. Another intention is to develop a permanent marquee event on campus that links the community to ADWC. Although the atmosphere of the event is light and enjoyable, it provides a detailed focus on student academic achievement."
The exhibits included student projects from every program offered on the ADWC campus, including Business, IT, Education, Health Sciences and Applied Media. In addition, ADWC's Diploma Semester 3 Business students held a charity bazaar to raise funds for Islamic Relief Worldwide, and ADWC's Health Sciences students held a Well-Woman Event to increase awareness of the importance of women's health and nutrition.
ADWC's Applied Media students also put their works on display. The College has been designated as a Centre of Excellence in Applied Media Technology and is a focal point for the sharing of best practices and resource material within the HCT system. The state-of-the-art showcase of graphic art and design projects created by students made it clear that the students are up to date in the use of innovative and emergent technology.
"Ajiyaluna was a great opportunity for the students to show off the range of their works, from video and photography to graphic design, multimedia and journalism," noted Helen Pearce, ADWC's Chair of Applied Media Technology. "We are proud to have displayed our students' talents and to share their work with the community."
Even ADWC's alumnae participated in the event. Since its inception, ADWC has produced over 5,000 graduates who are now employed in a wide spectrum of professions and sectors throughout the UAE. The former graduates and students of ADWC held an entrepreneurial booth to showcase their businesses and services, and to encourage ADWC students to complete their education in order to make a significant and worthwhile contribution to society.
"Ajiyaluna provided ADWC students with the voice to reach out to the community and say: 'This is our generation; this is what we can achieve'," noted Stephen Munns, ADWC's Dean of General Education. "The day was an opportunity for families to take pride in the work of their daughters and for ADWC to showcase the technical and academic levels the students reach during the course of their learning. We hope that this event will mark the beginning of a stronger, more innovative relationship between the College and the community, which will in turn afford increased opportunities for our students to demonstrate their remarkable skills."
