The funds raised by the run held on the 23rd of February this year, have contributed to a milestone in the history of the Terry Fox Run in Muscat. Over the past 7 years individuals and companies in Muscat have rallied together to donate and participate with the goal of raising money for cancer research in Oman. The run has witnessed a growing number of participants from all walks of life with each passing year. Most notably, this latest donation contributes to a total of RO106,800 donated to the Sultan Qaboos University over the years for the much needed research of breast cancer and childhood leukaemia.
'Cancer affects so many lives and is very real to people across all boundaries that are suffering from it or have afflicted family members. The Terry Fox Run is a touching example of a courageous young man and proves that we can indeed make a difference if we only try', said Jenny Snook the organiser of the 2006 Terry Fox Run.
'As per the Terry Fox Run International stipulations, funds raised must only be utilised within the local community and we hope that we have helped create a legacy for cancer research in Oman that will carry on long into the future,'
added Christopher Pike, General Manager of the Radisson SAS Hotel.
The organisers thanked all the companies, institutions, independent groups, schools, media and individuals who participated to help to increase awareness, and contributed to the local community by involvement in this charitable event. Details of the Terry Fox Run 2007, which will be the 8th run organised in Muscat will be announced shortly.
The Terry Fox Run has been credited as being the largest single-day fundraising event for cancer research in the world.
It is a non-competitive event where people get together as a family and raise money in Terry's name. It is a day of celebrating his legacy and helping to keep his dream of a cure for cancer alive.
