The exhibition centre's environmental strategy will last over three years and focuses on the three Rs - Reduce, Reuse or Recycle. The company hopes it will spread awareness about the impact of such waste, encouraging the industry to reduce and reuse waste, such as materials used on exhibition stands.
Simon Horgan, Adnec Chief Executive Officer, said the awareness campaign was launched because of the challenges faced by the international exhibition industry: 'Our education program for exhibitors and contractors will help communicate the moral responsibility and economic sense of reducing, reusing or recycling exhibition waste.'
The World Future Energy Summit, which takes place this week, is the largest conference to date looking at renewable and future energy, with speakers from around the world highlight innovative programmes and the need to more work to go into finding greener solutions.
The organisers hope it will help set future energy targets, influence government policies and showcase ideas that other organisations and countries can emulate.
World's greenest city
Also at the World Future Energy Summit will be representatives from Masdar City. A joint partnership between Abu Dhabi company Masdar and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), the two claim that once built, it will be the world's greenest city.
Occupying six square kilometres of land, it aims to be carbon neutral, with zero waste and also be car free. It will use energies such as solar to provide electricity, water cooling and desalination. Crops and landscaped gardens will be irrigated using grey water and treated waste water.
It is hoped that the city will eventually house 1,500 businesses and 50,000 residents.
