Qatar's Barwa Real Estate, a construction firm with investments reaching QAR40bn, is building Barwa City, to house 50,000 labourers. With the country's real estate boom in full swing, it is struggling to find housing for workers coming from India, Pakistan and the Far East.

"Right now a worker as to share a room with 25 others. In our project, we'll have restrictions on these numbers, by having a maximum of six workers sharing a room," said Ibrahim Fakhroo, Business Development Director at Barwa Real Estate during the MEED Qatar Conference.

The city will open in March, with 9,000 units spread across a two million square meters. It will include a cricket field, football pitch and a commercial center. "We want them [workers] to feel like real humans."

Fakhroo confessed that his company's main aim is to make a profit from the project. "We are not greedy and we do play a social role, but at the same time we do make it clear that we are here to make profits."
