Internet cable cut hits Qatar phone network

About 30 to 40 per cent of the Internet and telephone network in Qatar was affected by the breakdown in the undersea cable network near Egypt and a second cable in the GCC region, a senior Qtel official said, reported The Peninsula. A number of residents from India, Nepal and some other South Asian countries said that they were not able to make telephone calls to their families back home, by mobile or landlines. Either there was no connection available or the reception quality was very poor. Adil Al Mutawwa, executive director of Group Communications at Qtel, who confirmed the disruptions, said Qtel was trying its best to address the situation by providing alternative routes and additional capacity.
