Blood disorders are highly prevalent across the Middle East and patients needing regular blood transfusions are required to undergo lengthy and painful iron chelation treatment.

Key speeches and lectures on the benefits from the use of Exjade were delivered by Dr. Khawla Belhoul, Director of Dubai Thalassemia Center and members of her team.

"It was useful sharing the past year's experience of Exjade treatment in Dubai with patients and doctors from the Thalassemia community," said Dr. Khawla Belhoul.

Dr. Ali Taher discussed key developments and breakthroughs in Iron Overload Management that will be made available to the Thalassemia community in the Middle East.

"Worldwide, Thalassemia researchers and doctors are constantly looking for ways to enhance the quality of life and improve iron chelation treatments for Thalassemia patients," said Dr. Ali Taher , Professor of Hematology, American University of Beirut.

Following the introduction of Exjade, an oral drug that removes excess iron from key organs, life is now easier for patients at the Dubai Thalassemia Centre as the drug has helped to ease the discomfort and pain they previously experienced through their treatment.

Iron chelation is often necessary to prevent potentially life-threatening complications of excess iron being stored in patients who receive regular blood transfusions for diseases such as thalassemia, myelodysoplastic syndromes, sickle cell disease and other anemias.

A single dose of Exjade works throughout the day and can be taken in a drink; this oral drug removes excess iron from key organs including the heart and liver replacing the use of the cumbersome infusion pump which is needed by patients for up to 12 hours a day, five to seven days a week.

Exjade, is currently the only oral iron chelator approved by the FDA, and has been approved in the EMEA, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar.
