A team of lifeguards at the Crowne Plaza Muscat were recently given the opportunity to boost their knowledge of lifesaving, CPR and first aid techniques, in a week long, intensive training course.

The pool and beach lifeguard training was designed to refresh and enhance their lifesaving skills, while updating them on various new first aid techniques, practiced by the most experienced and respected provider of lifeguard training, the American Red Cross.

Co-ordinated by certified American Red Cross instructors from UAE-based Denan Sports Services, the Professional lifeguard training included refresher modules like rescue skills, CPR and surveillance, to help recognise and prevent severe injuries at both the pool and beach areas.

The course, which was conducted in both English and Arabic, also included training in public interaction and effective communication.

Mr. David Todd, General Manager of Crowne Plaza Muscat said, "The Crowne Plaza Muscat has always stressed the importance of continuous training within our team of highly trained staff. For our group of lifeguards, this is not just a bonus; it is essential! The safety of our patrons is a top priority, and although our lifeguards already have extensive knowledge, education and experience in lifesaving and first aid, it is imperative that these skills are constantly updated and renewed".

"The American Red Cross is a globally renowned body, for which we have a huge amount of respect. The first aid module of the course focused heavily on the prevention of disease transmission in the case of bites and stings, wounds, burns, poisoning and extreme temperature emergencies.

Mr. Wilson Rayan, Recreational Manager at the Crowne Plaza Muscat said, "A lot of the first aid we have to administer comes from bites and wounds, or the effects of the extreme temperatures, particularly during the summer months when patrons can often suffer from heat stroke and dehydration. Our team is highly trained to spot this potentially fatal condition and treat it effectively until the emergency services arrive.

"Our lifeguards are also highly vigilant around children, particularly near the water, where they can be extremely vulnerable and can get into difficulty very quickly. The course has given each team member the opportunity to ensure that their skills are updated, and they are ready and willing to deal with any emergency situation that arises, in a professional and effective manner."
