The award's general categories cover the GCC region, while the award for applied research covers the entire Middle East and Arab region.

Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, Vice Chairman of Hamdan Award for Academic Excellence said, "The vision and unlimited support of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, has given the Award its prestigious position as a bench mark for academic excellence.

With the award in its tenth year, it will motivate the educational sector to achieve the standards of excellence, providing incentives for educational growth and academic brilliance. The award's regional reach will enable us to harness the potential from the region, usefully engaging and employing it for the future."

HE Sulaiman AbdulKhalek Al Ansari, CEO of the Hamdan Award said, "The current cycle recorded a significant growth of 45 percent from the previous year and included for the first time a contribution from Oman. The applied research award also witnessed a growth in the number of participations in the Arab world. This year the award received 52 research papers, up from the mere 12 received previously. This increase reflects the success of the award in spreading the culture of academic excellence to the countries in the GCC and the Arab world."

Dr. Khalifa Al Suwaidi, member of the board of trustees and chief coordinator for the central judging panel said, "The 64-member judging panel included members from various educational institutes who are experienced with the award. The members were divided among the different committees according to the award categories. The judges received specialized training for quality and report writing and an informative discussion about judging standards and indicators for the award. The committees have begun classifying the applications according to the categories specified. There are 368 local nominations that have been judged and qualified for the final phase, as well as 76 applications from GCC, and 25 applications for the applied research award from the Arab countries."

The second phase will begin in early February with field visits and personal interviews with the nominees both locally and from the GCC. He added that the quality of the applications is high, which suggests that the best practices program that trained the participants has paid off. The best practices program has been held for the last two years.
