Doubts remain about Internet outage

  • Tuesday, February 19 - 2008 at 10:50

The head of the International Telecommunication Union said the damage to several undersea telecom cables that caused outages across the Middle East and Asia may have been a deliberate act of sabotage, reported AFP. Sami Al-Murshed, the UN agency's head of development, said doubts remain about the prevailing view that the cables were cut by accident, especially as the cables are at great depths under the sea and are not passed over by ships. Five undersea cables were damaged in late January and early February leading to disruption to Internet and telephone services in parts of the Middle East and south Asia.
