Building on the resounding success of its inaugural Business Study Mission (BSM) in May 2007, the Singapore Management University (SMU) is sending another two groups of undergraduates to the fast-growing economic region of the Middle East in 2008.

The first group will be travelling to the UAE and Bahrain from April 19 to 27 and the second group will be going to the UAE and Saudi Arabia from May 25 to 31.

The premise of these BSMs is to expose SMU undergraduates to the business spectrum in the Middle East and to help them establish networks and relationships.

Singapore's Senior Minister of State from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, was the Guest-of-Honour for the Pre-Departure Tea Reception this morning at SMU.

A dialogue session titled "Ties between Middle East and Singapore - Challenges, Progress and the Future" was held and it was graced by distinguished guests such as His Excellency Asim Mirza Alrahmah, Charge d' Affaires of UAE Embassy and Ambassador Verghese Mathews, Singapore High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

The dialogue serves as the penultimate event to the Business Study Missions as well as a flagging-off gathering and tea reception for the students going on the BSMs.

By using a specific country as a launch pad, SMU's Business Study Missions to the Middle East take both a macro and micro perspective in looking into the fast-evolving business environment of and the available opportunities in the Gulf Region, with particular emphasis on the socio-political, cultural, legal environments, and how they influence the business practices over there.

Via many unique case studies, group projects and guest seminars, this module aims to present SMU students with real-life environmental influences and challenges that impact businesses in the Gulf region.

To aid their preparations for the upcoming BSM trips, the SMU undergraduates have to attend a series of core lectures over fourteen weeks.

These lectures will introduce the theoretical contexts and frameworks applicable to the Middle East and will enhance the students' understanding of the factors behind the region's rapid development.

Different speakers from various industries as well as government agencies are invited to conduct special guest lectures on the various aspects of doing business in the Middle East.
