The British Consul General John Hawkins, his wife Rosemarie and the Mission to Seafarers in Dubai will be hosting the High Tea on 1 March 2008.
"We are delighted to be able to support the Mission to Seafarers in their important work helping seafarers of all nationalities and backgrounds," commented Mr. Hawkins.
The UAE's east coast is the second largest bunker anchorage in the world with up to 150 ships anchored off shore at any given time. As many as 2,000 seafarers maybe unable to communicate with family and friends at home for weeks, sometimes months, leading to isolation and loneliness. The vessel has an Internet café, a library with DVDs and books, a medical clinic, access to telecommunications and pastoral support.
Reverend Steven Miller, Mission to Seafarers, Dubai, said:
"The High Tea is aimed at raising awareness about the role seafarers play in our lives and the work of the 'Flying Angel' Seafarers Support Boat. The money raised is vital in supporting the seafarers we all rely upon to bring us the majority of our daily needs."
