Call for English, Arabic balance in education

  • Sunday, February 24 - 2008 at 07:42

The Arabic language could face extinction in the UAE and the Gulf in the long run if education policies are not revised to strike a balance between English and Arabic as the medium of instruction, according to speakers on the first day of the two-day international Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages conference in the American University of Sharjah, reported Khaleej Times. Fatima Badry, Professor of English and Linguistics and Director of TESOL at AUS, said that if Arabic was relegated to a second class status, the language might become extinct like Sanskrit, Greek and Latin. Citing examples of France, Syria and Canada, the speakers noted that Gulf countries could teach subjects in both English and Arabic or alternate between the two languages every year.
