ENOC employees roll up sleeves for good cause

  • PRESS RELEASE

Emirates National Oil Company, as part of its long-term commitment to give back to the community, yesterday organised an in-house blood donation campaign in conjunction with Al Wasl Hospital.

The day-long blood drive was held at ENOC House Auditorium, and 60 donors from ENOC's over 30 subsidiaries donated blood for the worthy cause.

The aim of the initiative was to assist children suffering from the genetic blood disorder Thalassemia, as well as benefiting the hospital's trauma centre and its leukaemia and open-heart surgery patients.

"Assisting Al Wasl Hospital in its goal to reduce the blood bank shortfalls in Dubai demonstrates ENOC's ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of UAE citizens and residents," said Saeed Abdullah Khoory, ENOC's Group Chief Executive. "As a socially-responsible company, we take pride in giving back to the community on a continuous and sustained basis. It is positive to see the proactive involvement of our ENOC/EPPCO staff members at every level."

Dr. Mohamed Salah Eldil, Head of Medical at the Dubai Thalassemia Centre, endorsed ENOC's campaign as it not only provides the much needed local supply of blood but also raises awareness about the condition. "We currently treat around 500 patients at the centre and 450 of those require regular blood transfusions every three to four weeks. We are truly thankful to ENOC for taking a leading role in helping our cause."

Thalassemia is a major public health concern facing children around the world, and is prevalent throughout UAE.

The disease is characterised by defective production of hemoglobin, leading to reduced production and over-destruction of red blood cells.

Thalassemia can prove fatal in certain cases, but the severity depends on the combination of genes that the child inherits.
