Test excavation begins on Dubai's Arabian Canal

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, March 04 - 2008 at 00:10

Limitless has began test excavation of the Dhs40bn Arabian Canal in Dubai, to better understand the geology engineering contractors will face. The Canal will be 75km long once completed stretches from the Waterfront on the border of Abu Dhabi, goes behind the new international airport and then connects back with the coast at the Marina.

In some places contractors will have to excavate to a depth of 70m to keep the canal at sea level, which it runs throughout its route. The project will involve the excavation of one billion cubic metres of material

'Because of the scale of the operation and its depth we need a better understanding of the geology,' Ian Raine, head of the Arabian Canal project at Limitless, told delegates at the MEED Dubai Megaprojects conference. 'After 2m depth you get to very hard rock.'

Major construction work should be completed in three to five years, with all new residential developments, by which time it will house 1.5 million people, taking 10-15 years.

Contracts will be awarded this year, with a number of companies taking on the work. Although the canal runs through land owned by other developers, 14,000 hectares are owned by Limitless, where a new city will be built on the 'Inland Canal'.
