'Because of the scale of the operation and its depth we need a better understanding of the geology,' Ian Raine, head of the Arabian Canal project at Limitless, told delegates at the MEED Dubai Megaprojects conference. 'After 2m depth you get to very hard rock.'
Major construction work should be completed in three to five years, with all new residential developments, by which time it will house 1.5 million people, taking 10-15 years.
Contracts will be awarded this year, with a number of companies taking on the work. Although the canal runs through land owned by other developers, 14,000 hectares are owned by Limitless, where a new city will be built on the 'Inland Canal'.
