  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, March 04 - 2008 at 14:18
  • PRESS RELEASE

Meydan, the first horseracing mixed used real estate project, is proud to announce that construction has started on the first and mezzanine floors of the Meydan Racecourse Grandstand, less than one year after the iconic development was revealed to the world.

The landmark horseracing city is moving at a furious pace ahead of the official opening for the Dubai World Cup in March 2010.

When complete the grandstand is expected to have a seating capacity of more than 60,000 people, making it one of the largest international horseracing venues in the world. The mezzanine floor will include unique features such as the DRC office, Meydan Museum and Gallery, the Banyan Tree Resort-managed Meydan Hotel, main lobby and entrance lobby for the grandstand.

Head of Projects at Meydan, Douglas Small, revealed. "A total of 52,000 cubic metres of concrete has already been laid, with a total of 2600 construction workers currently employed on site, which will rise to 5,000 at the height of the works. Sixteen tower cranes are currently on site, with a further two to be added shortly."

Away from the racecourse, earthwork for Meydan City is near completion, with construction on the canals about to begin. Individual plot developers have already started drawing submissions for Meydan's review in anticipation of work commencement on site. The completion of earthworks marks a significant step toward meeting commitments made to Meydan's clients.

The city will include residential and commercial and retail properties, set among picturesque canals, parks, tram-lines and pedestrian promenades. The masterplan for the city is equipped with all necessary amenities for a world class city function.
