Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease in which bones become fragile and porous leading to an increase risk of bone fractures and breakage. It has become particularly prevalent in the GCC, affecting 16% of young women. Osteoporosis is a growing worldwide health problem, where one out of three women and one out of five men are affected".

"On a positive note, Osteoporosis can be prevented by adopting healthy dietary and lifestyle habits, by being physically active and following a balanced diet rich in Calcium and other important nutrients for strong, healthy bones," states Karine Antoniades Turk, the Market Nutritionist for Nestlé Middle East.

"Nestlé NESVITA Pro-Bones is a Low Fat Milk that is not only enriched with Calcium to provide women between the ages of 19 to 50 with their Daily Calcium Requirement with just two glasses every day, but it also includes CalciLock, a unique combination of nutrients that helps absorb and lock Calcium into the bones.

"By extending our support to this conference, we at NESTLÉ aim to highlight the various causes of Osteoporosis, the risk factors involved, and above all the importance of healthy dietary and lifestyle habits to prevent Osteoporosis. This initiative is a part of NESTLÉ NESVITA year long awareness drive that was launched to mark the Global 'World Osteoporosis Day' Campaign on the 20th of October 2007."

About Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, in which the bones become porous and break easily, is one of the world's most common and debilitating diseases. The result: pain, loss of movement, inability to perform daily chores, and in many cases, death. One out of three women over 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures, as will one out of five men1, 2, 3. Unfortunately, screening for people at risk is far from being a standard practice. Osteoporosis can, to a certain extent, be prevented, it can be easily diagnosed and effective treatments are available.
The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is the only worldwide (non profit) organization dedicated to the fight against osteoporosis. It brings together scientists, physicians, patient societies and corporate partners. Working with its 182 member societies in 88 locations, and other healthcare-related organizations around the world, IOF encourages awareness and prevention, early detection and improved treatment of osteoporosis.
