UAE cancels 60 food licences
United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, March 05 - 2008 at 07:42
The UAE Ministry of Economy has cancelled 60 commercial agency agreements for basic foodstuffs in a bid to break monopolies in the sector and reduce food price-related inflation, reported Gulf News. Dr Hashem Al Nuaimi, director of the ministry's Consumer Protection Department, said beginning March 29, all imported foodstuffs must have Arabic labels detailing the item, and the entry of any food product that does not comply with this will be banned. Establishments that do not comply will face fines, suspension, or closure. The UAE imports about 85% of its food.
