Malaysia's efforts to promote itself as an educational hub among Middle East and North African countries is bearing fruit, reported Malaysian national news agency Bernama. The number of students from the Mena region grew from about 2,000 in 2000 to 6,000 in 2005, 7,800 in 2006 and more than 11,000 in 2007, according to Malaysia Education Promotion Centre Regional Director for Middle East and North Africa, Shushilil Azam B. Shuib. He said the country initially hoped to target 13,500 students from the region by 2010, but he expects to achieve this number by this year. It has revised its target to 15,000 students by 2010, he noted.
