Ras Laffan grows its green gown

As part of the Qatar Tree Day, which is aimed at promoting community planting of native trees and plants, Ras Laffan Industrial City with the cooperation of the General Department for Research and Agricultural Development, organized the Ras Laffan Tree Day on the 4th of March 2008 at the RLC conservation area.

This initiative was inaugurated by RLC Acting Director, Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Speaking on the occasion Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al Thani said:

"Ras Laffan Industrial City recognizes the importance of preserving nature's gifts and the abundance of resources bestowed on Qatar. It is this dedication to make the area a better place for the present and the future generations that motivated Ras Laffan to commit to this annual event in collaboration with the other organizations who value the environment."


Mr. Mohamed Al Khouri, Assistant Director of Public Gardens and Landscaping Department and representative of the General Department for Research and Agricultural Development attended the event, and a representative from Al Khor and Dakhira municipality and about 40 students from different schools of the north community helped in planting different trees ranging from Acacia, Neem and Citrus Lemon to Ficus Altissima, Casurina Equisitifolia and Conocarpus Erectus.

School children helped dress RLC conservation area in green, thus increasing the habitat area for the ostrich, oryx, al reem, peacocks, al houbara, and several birds' species.

The students have further contributed to the event by performing some of the event related activities that they have learned at school such as singing and performing plays related to the theme of the day.

Celebrating the Qatar Tree Day with the local community is a part of RLC commitment to maintain better environment with the aim to move forward towards living in harmony between environment and industrial development.

This initiative, along with other conservation projects within RLC including birds conservation, turtle conservation and mangrove conservation projects reflects an optimistic future, a bright future for natural resources and for nature's habitats...
