This third initiative, entitled 'Your medicine - Play it safe' is aimed to raise awareness of the importance of medication safety amongst healthcare providers and the public.

The opening ceremony launched the campaign on Sunday 2nd of March with an opening speech by Tawam Hospital's CMO Dr. Jack Borders, and speeches were delivered by the departments involved followed by a dinner.

The event held at the Rotana Hotel in AL Ain was attended by Tawam Hospital's physicians, pharmacists, nurses, administrators and other healthcare professionals.

'Your medicine - Play it Safe' campaign is for healthcare providers to highlight areas of concern with regard to medication safety while building an effective and safe medication environment at Tawam Hospital.

In conjunction to these discussions the healthcare providers will focus on educating the public about the medicine they are taking to increase the patients' understanding and involve them in the decision making process to ensure the treatment prescribed best suits their lifestyle. It will also create an ideal platform for the public to ask questions and raise any concerns about their medication.

Dr. Jack Borders, CMO of Tawam Hospital said: 'At Tawam Hospital, we feel that it is imperative for our patients to have a complete understanding of their medication in terms of their effects and how they work towards curing their diagnosed condition. In some cases certain medications can have side effects that can drastically change or affect their day-to-day lives'. Moreover, this campaign is a reinforcement of our commitment to providing the best services to the population of AL Ain as well as our patients from other Emirates and the wider GCC region.'

Commenting on the importance of medication safety, Dr. Riad Abdelkarim, Chairman of Medication Safety Subcommittee at Tawam Hospital, said: 'The medication safety campaign aims to promote a culture of medication safety that emphasizes on non-punitive reporting of both medical errors and adverse drug reactions. The latter helps our dedicated research teams at Johns Hopkins Medicine in the United States, with their research and subsequently their valuable contributions to new findings and treatments.'

'Today's medication is more complex and powerful than ever before. We too, at Tawam's Pharmacy Department, conduct adverse drug reaction reporting and follow-up, medication error prevention and detection, medication use evaluation, participate in research protocols, contribute to the education of hospital staff and pharmacy trainees and we evidently share our findings with our colleagues at Johns Hopkins,' added Dr. Hashem Tarifi, Head of Department of Pharmaceutical Services Tawam Hospital.

He continued, 'Medication safety is key to the healing process of our patients. It may seem trivial but it is of utmost importance that patients tell their doctors what products they are taking. Everything! - down to every supplement, herbal remedy, non-prescription medicine, and of course any prescription drug they may be taking.'

As part of the campaign, public awareness activities and exhibitions are taking place at the AL Ain Mall. Tawam Hospital's Pharmacy staff offered medication counseling and educational materials daily from the 2nd- 6th of March, every morning from 10am to 2pm and every evening from 6pm to 10pm.

Visitors could also pick up brochures and read the posters display throughout the mall showcasing important safety issues. Similarly healthcare providers were invited to attend their own specific exhibition located at Tawam's Polyclinic Building from 8am to 4pm daily.
