- United Arab Emirates: Sunday, March 09 - 2008 at 13:52
- PRESS RELEASE
Under the patronage of HE Engineer Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, and the support of Alfahim Group, the Ministry of Economy has organized a campaign of various activities to raise awareness of the 3rd GCC Consumer Protection Day, in which a two-week celebration will take place across the UAE under the slogan, 'Our aim is Consumer Protection'.
Alfahim Group and the Ministry of Economy call for consumers to become aware of their rights and to consult and cooperate with the Consumer Protection Administration, which aims to guide the consumer, confront merchandisers of their irrational increase in prices and raise awareness of the Consumer Protection Day.
"The Ministry of Economy protects the consumer from abuse and prevents irrational increase in prices through establishing the Consumer Protection Administration and conducting elaborate economic studies to understand the reasons or excuses of the increase in prices and presenting the results to the Higher Committee of Consumer Protection to take appropriate action," confirmed Dr. Al Naimi.
Additionally, in collaboration with other governmental organizations, cooperative societies and local foundations, the administration will be monitoring the market to ensure it balances itself with providing the consumer variety and high competition, while preventing misleading the consumer and deceiving him/her for a safe and healthy environment.
Due to the importance of protecting the consumer in the gulf countries, the heads of the GCC met in 2005 and decided 1 March of every year would be a GCC Consumer Protection Day where all the gulf countries would celebrate by raising awareness of how to protect the consumer and guarantee his/her rights and safety are communicated. In 2006, the administration operated under the slogan, 'Guiding the Consumer', while in 2007 they promoted 'Towards a new culture of protecting the consumer'. This year, the administration's motive is to communicate to the consumer 'Our aim is consumer protection'.
As a result of the World Consumer Protection Day being on the 15 March, the Ministry of Economy has announced that celebration of the Consumer Protection Day in the UAE will start from 1 March and extend to the 15 March.
