Having always placed environment conservation at the forefront and being instrumental in developing strategies and policies in order to conserve the natural environment of Oman, Shell Oman reinstated its commitment to sustaining the environment with its participation at the recently held Gulf Eco 2008 organized by Oman International Trade & Exhibitions (OITE) under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, supported by UNESCO and UNEP.

'At Shell Oman we firmly believe that efforts towards protecting the environment should not be restricted to internal legislation or policies or activities to clean-up after something has happened. It should also entail elimination or reduction of any impact by Company operations on the environment. Gulf Eco is an unparalleled occasion to build awareness of the technologies and practices that Shell Oman employs to minimise the ecological impact of our operations,' said Mr. Faisal Al Hashar, Managing Director, Shell Oman.

Since its inception Shell Oman has directed its attention at maintaining high environmental standards. This focus on the environment has developed and progressed in Shell Oman in line with local and international principles. Strict international standards are followed to ensure that Shell Oman applies the latest techniques in protecting the environment. It has adopted both administrative and technical tools to assist in avoiding any harmful consequences to the environment.

Besides complying with stringent HSSE practices, Shell Oman uses modern double-skin storage tanks with electronic monitoring systems to minimise the risk of soil contamination. The company has also pioneered the reclamation of potential air pollutant vapours through an innovative Vapour Recovery Unit. Shell Oman is also committed to the continuous evolution of products, like Shell Helix Super engine oil to reduce vehicular emission, and Shell 'Better Mileage' petrol for more efficient combustion.

The Gulf Eco held a convergence of industry professionals, decision & policy makers, municipal - governmental and diplomatic officials, senior corporate business executives, high net worth businessmen & entrepreneurs, agents & buyers and residents of the Sultanate of Oman. The event provided an ideal opportunity to tap the immense market potential in the Sultanate of Oman.

Shell Oman has also long been an active participant in several programmes promoting eco-tourism, and sponsoring research on critically endangered species - like the Arabian leopard, and whales and dolphins. It has proactively taken on environmental initiatives like cleanup operations along beaches and coral reefs. These endeavors have been in collaboration with various government and non-government organizations, like the Office of the Adviser for Conservation of the Environment (Diwan of Royal Court), the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Environment Society of Oman, among others.
