Creating a global platform for 'Treating Terrorism'

Under the patronage of His Excellency Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, Dubai Consultancy Research and Media Centre is organizing "Treating Terrorism" conference at the Dusit Thani - Dubai Hotel this March 17- 18.

The convention, held for the third time in Dubai, brings together key experts from around the globe to focus on the ongoing and prospective terrorism threats across the globe, and the new tactics that might be employed.

A panel of internationally reputed experts will present the most recognized motivation and forms of terrorism as well as an evaluation of the existing approaches to terrorism and the alarming emerging threats.

Key speakers at the conference include Dr. Paul Stares, Senior Fellow for conflict prevention and Director, Centre for Preventive action, Council on foreign Relations, Washington DC, and Dr. Mohammed A Nijimi, Head of Religion Studies Department as King Fahed Security College, and Dr. Claire Spencer, Head of the Middle East Programme, Chatam House in London.

During the first day, the forum will offer a broad understanding of the radical perceptions that lead to terrorism with a focus on Al Qaeda appeal amongst certain individuals, as well as an overview of successful treatment measures as applied in Singapore.

The first day will end with an evaluation of the key international initiatives to prevent terrorism.

His Excellency Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police commended the conference that will offer a review of the currently applied strategies and examine the emerging threats in a technologically advanced world and the knowledge and expertise that will allow the practioners to evaluate the current situation and devise an action plan when needed. He also called for establishing "global justice" as a main prerequisite to eradicating the root reasons of terrorism.

On day two of the conference, the experts will assess the anti-terrorism policies in war-torn regions such as Iraq and Afghanistan and discuss the imminent threats to the Levant region.

The final session of the event focused on "Treating the Theological Roots" of terrorism will showcase the de-radicalisation efforts that are underway in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, President of Dubai Consultancy Research and Media Centre and chairman of the conference said: "the conference builds on the successful first round that was launched in 2005 which focused the traditional methods to avoid terrorism and highlighted the key related issue of radicalism.

In 2006, the conference examined the various facets of the terrorist personality from the religious, psychological, social and political perspectives with a showcase of the Yemeni experience.

"This year, we look at the treatment applications across the Arab and Islamic world. Our aim is to leverage the practioners knowledge and the expertise of the professionals to devise contingency plans that would efficiently face up to the emerging threats. Our aim is to create this global platform or the nucleus for an internationally applied protocol".
