Business Software Alliance organizes Round-Table with public prosecution in Oman

Business Software Alliance, the international association established by the software industry to promote a safe and legal digital world, in partnership with the Oman Public Prosecution, has announced that it has recently successfully concluded the Oman Round Table meeting as part of joint efforts to encourage Omani ministries and authorities to be actively involved in BSA's region-wide anti-piracy campaign.

The Oman Round Table is part of BSA's regional initiatives to strengthen collaboration between BSA and relevant ministries across the GCC in the battle against software piracy.

Representatives from BSA and the Public Prosecution discussed with several government representatives key recommendations that are aimed at further improving Oman's aggressive anti-piracy initiatives, which have been credited largely for limiting the country's economic losses to piracy.

Jawad Al Redha, Co-Chairman, BSA Middle East, said: "The Oman Round Table with their honourable judges at the Ministry of Justice, Public Prosecution and Police, is the perfect venue to thresh out issues and identify different means to address various challenges in our unified efforts in combating piracy. Oman has achieved significant success in its battle to control the spread of piracy, and BSA is pleased to provide all the necessary support to sustain the country's momentum in its drive against this illegal trade".

Among the recommendations discussed at the Oman Round Table were stiffer penalties against violators of intellectual property rights (IPR), more aggressive enforcement initiatives against illegal resellers, and intensified information and educational campaign through initiatives such as the Round Table.

Also tackled were a possible review of the pricing structure of software products and the establishment of innovative measures to enhance IPR awareness.

BSA has been a leading figure in the global fight against cyber criminality through initiatives that focus on educating consumers and providing assistance to authorities in conducting anti-piracy enforcement activities.

Established in 1988, BSA has programs in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the Middle East where the IT sector has been posting record growth rates.
