YouGovSiraj conduct research on in-flight mobile phone use

Regional travelers give unexpected thumbs up to in-flight mobile phone use, according to YouGovSiraj research.

The recent announcement that Emirates Airline will be allowing passengers to use mobile phones after take-off, will be welcomed by the region's travelers, despite global concerns. In November 2007 YouGovSiraj conducted research into this controversial issue and the results were remarkable.

Nearly half of all regional business (47%) and leisure (43%) travelers say they would like complete freedom to use their mobile phones on board, less than 20% would like to keep them switched off. These findings are in stark contrast with the more mature UK market, where a similar YouGov study found that travelers are not in favour of mobile phone use in the air. Of the 380 travelers questioned in a YouGov UK poll, only 16 per cent say they are in favour of in-flight mobiles, compared 56 per cent who are against it.

The regional findings come from YouGovSiraj's Travel Tracker, a MENA wide research study, looking in detail at travel and tourism trends. 3844 people, from across the region, who are regular flyers responded to the survey during November 2007.

"We identified this trend at the end of last year and it is good to see Emirates is now responding to regional customer demands, despite mixed reactions to the idea around the world. The perception is that most people would find this service irritating but among regional travelers it is a service that is wanted. The need to stay ahead of trends like this is vital if an airline wishes to remain competitive", says Jane Wilson, Head of YouGovSiraj's Travel and Tourism Division.

It is reported that Emirates Airlines expects to launch a mobile phone service on one of its Boeing 777 planes as early as January next year and will then roll it out across its entire fleet. According to reports certain restrictions will apply. There will be no calls during landing or take-off and text only services will be applicable during night flights.

YouGovSiraj's Travel Tracker reveals that approximately one quarter of business and leisure travelers believe special dedicated areas should be established where phones can be used. Approximately one in five liked the idea of texting only being allowed in silent mode.

"In this part of the world business travelers want to remain in touch with the outside world when they are flying. Airlines will have to be careful how they introduce this around the globe, where there is concern the use of mobile phones may become a real irritant for other passengers. But overall this new initiative shows that Emirates is in touch with the needs of regional travelers", Jane Wilson continued.
