Launched in March, 2008 in UAE, F1 in Schools is a multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 11 to 18 deploy CAD/CAM software to design, test, manufacture and race miniature CO2-powered balsa wood F1 cars. UP will set-up and run the F1 in Schools throughout the Middle East.

"Diversity in education is important for a child's development, their options should not be limited" said Simon E. Azzam, Chief Executive Officer, UP. "F1 in Schools is a global educational initiative that raises awareness of Formula One among students and school children and it will give them an informed view of potential careers in engineering, Formula One, science, technology and marketing. Introducing the programme in the region will expose students, both girls and boys at an early age to a worldwide initiative that focuses on the dimensions of motorsports by creating a fun and exciting learning environment".

The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

Don Sankey has been appointed by UP as the Director of F1 in Schools programme in the region and will be responsible for the overall operation.

"During the launch period, we will conduct periodic road shows in schools across the UAE and the GCC to introduce the programme to educators. The road shows will cover the basic elements of the programme, rules and regulations on the F1 in Schools challenge, essential material needed and kit for the programme that will aid them to design the cars, as well as how they can register for local, regional and international challenges," said Sankey.

Schools will have the opportunity to register to the programme from May till the end of September. The registration process will be available via a designated website for the programme.

Challenges will be conducted among schools within each emirate who will then be able to compete with one another, after which the winners of those schools will compete in national finals.

The winning emirate at the national finals will represent the UAE in regional and international championships.

"Our partnership with F1 in Schools came naturally based on the rise of the popularity of Motorsports in the region, and UP's vision of creating an interest in this field among the population. With the facilities readily available, young students will have the opportunity to diversify their options in the types of career they plan to get into and this programme will broaden their academic scope," added Azzam.

About F1 in Schools

Our mission is to help change perceptions of engineering, science and technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in Engineering, Science and Technology'.

F1 in Schools founding partners Denford, BAE SYSTEMS and Jaguar are working together to produce an exciting educational experience for students and teachers alike, challenging negative stereotypes associated with engineering in a fun and positive way.

F1 in Schools is a not-for-profit company with the aim of raising the profile of engineering as a career through the CAD/CAM Design Challenge. The Challenge - Students are given a brief to design a model CO2 powered F1 Car of the future using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) package such as Solid Edge. Once the cars are designed, they are transferred into CNC (Computer Numerical Control) language using a CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) package such as EdgeCAM. Cars are then manufactured on a CNC machine such as the Denford MicroRouter. Students can test their designs before attending a regional final, either in school or at the Dubai Autodrome which will serve as the local manufacturing/test/race centre.
