Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of the University of Sharjah, students from more than 20 universities from across the UAE are participating at the event.

In line with His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan declaration of the year 2008 as the National Identity Year, the two-day conference will see the students running the sessions and presenting their own thesis based on a briefing held last November 2007 at the University of Sharjah.

Following the key note speakers at the opening ceremony, a film on national identity was played capturing the sense of belonging and devotion to homeland. Ahmed Al Mansoori, Coordinator General of Watani, was honoured by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qassimi for sponsoring the event, and he also received an award from Sharjah Scouts Committee for the continuous support given by Watani to the young people of the UAE.

During the conference, the students will interact with each other and the key speakers, share opinions and discuss the most suitable solutions in preserving national identity and enhancing the spirit of good citizenship amidst the challenges of an increasingly globalized world. The agenda also includes discussions on enhancing volunteering initiatives and setting practices for good citizenships based on local, regional, and international practices. It will also focus on the fundamentals of patriotism based on theoretical and social concepts, the role of the national youngsters in developing the society while facing globalization, present and future challenges and opportunities.

At the end of its proceedings, a number of recommendations will be endorsed, based on the students' visions regarding national identity issues. These recommendations will be shared with the various educational institutions, the media, as well as the communities and social entities and NGOs.

Ahmed Al Mansoori commended the students' efforts and their rational approach to understanding and handling key topical issues. Al Mansoori said: 'As the UAE progresses further towards a brighter future, we face many challenges that require in depth understanding and commitment of the young generation to the development of our nation on social as well as economic levels. Each one of us has a key role to play in preserving our national identity and it is through platforms like this one today that we come together to discuss the way forward.'
