- PRESS RELEASE
Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG), the first medical college in the UAE, launched the 'Medical Research Fund' (MRF), a unique medical research program during the second 'Emirates Pathologists Meeting', hosted by the college today.
Commenting on the launch of the MRF, Mr. Saleh Lootah, Executive Director of the Dubai Medical College and Vice Chairman of the Medical Research Fund said, "Research in general is at a very nascent stage in the UAE. Through the Medical Research Fund, we aim to facilitate access to funds, educational and technological resources and encourage and support academic professionals to promote health and knowledge through medical research in the region. Thus Medical Research Fund aims to create a framework to overcome obstacles in performing community research, by channeling resources to quality researchers who deserve such support".
"The research programs are designed to benefit the broader public both directly and indirectly. Hence, the Medical Research Fund is highly dependant on a national effort that engages individuals, groups and the corporate sector to usher in a new era of medical achievement in the United Arab Emirates", added Mr. Lootah.
Prof. Fatehia Aly Bayoumy, General Secretary of the MRF added, "The MRF will be governed by key specialised committees that will oversee the research programs from the technical, financial and ethical perspectives. These committees will propose funding programs and develop the criteria and guidelines for funding".
The Medical Research Fund aims to improve the standards of healthcare nationally and regionally through research programs within four core areas: Infectious Diseases, Environmental Diseases, Genetic disorders and Young Researchers where the Fund aims to offer special opportunities to encourage young researchers to contribute to the areas identified.
Dubai Medical College was established in 1986 with the objective of offering girls the opportunity to study Medicine within the United Arab Emirates.

About Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG)Dubai Medical College for girls was established in 1986 by philanthropist Haj Saeed Bin Ahmed Al Lootah, Founder and Chairman of the Conglomerate S.S. Lootah Group. The fact that DMCG is solely for girls and that DMCG was started at a time when higher education for girls in the region was lagging far behind than that of the developed countries, makes the college very unique even to this day. The 5 year course is accredited by 'Ministry of Higher Education' and the college is enlisted in the World Health Organisation (WHO) Directory of Medical Schools.
In addition to Dubai Medical College, the other educational institutions supported by the S.S. Lootah Group are Dubai Pharmacy College, Dubai Medical Treatment and Research centre, Dubai Institute for Environmental Research, Islamic schools, Technical Institutes and Research Centers. They also run orphanages and welfare institutions.
