Report chides GCC education system

  • Tuesday, April 08 - 2008 at 08:06

Although GCC countries are investing heavily to reform their educational systems, their returns are modest, according to a World Bank report. The report said GCC countries have spent an average of 5% of their GDPs on education, spearheaded by the UAE, which allocated about 25% of its federal budget for education. However, the GCC's education system has yet to achieve its full capacity to produce graduates with the skills and expertise necessary to compete with other regions, the bank said. It warns that the region is likely to face a challenge in recruiting the number of qualified teachers needed to meet the demand by 2015, especially in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
