The two parties were involved in a series of discussions and exchanged views with an aim to strengthen each other's eGovernment infrastructure.

Dr. Chang-Kon provided an overview of South Korea's eGovernance framework and highlighted factors that have enabled the country to be recognised as one of the world's leading eGovernments.

"Our meeting with our counterparts in Dubai gave us an opportunity to have a fuller understanding of the eGovernance set up here. This meeting was crucial to both parties, especially because Dubai leads the regional eGovernance initiative and has adopted an aggressive approach to provide most of the government services online. We are certain that Dubai can benefit significantly from South Korea's eGovernment experience,"

said Dr. Chang-Kon.

Commenting on the visit of the South Korean delegation, Salem Al Shair, eServices Director, Dubai eGovernment, said, "This visit facilitated an exchange of eGovernment experiences and best practices between Dubai and South Korea, which will go a long way in helping both countries reach their full eGovernance potential in terms of accessibility and effectiveness."

"The South Korean government, like Dubai, has been committed to building a robust eGovernance infrastructure that has improved the accessibility of government information and services, and built up a solid foundation for residents, businesses and the government, to further benefit from electronic opportunities," he added.

South Korea's eGovernment initiative dates back to the early 1980s when the government began to build national computer networks and consolidate key databases under the 'National Basic Information System'. Today, various studies have ranked South Korea - which also boasts one of the highest high-speed internet connection rates - as one of the world's leading eGovernments.

Dubai eGovernment officials also made a presentation to the visiting South Korean delegation on the strategies, plans, projects and future aims of Dubai eGovernment, as well as the steps to be taken in this domain to attain a full eGovernment status.

Through Dubai eGovernment's comprehensive web portal www.dubai.ae, citizens, residents, visitors and business enterprises can access more than 2,000 electronic services, including bill payment, health card renewal, company registration and Municipality permits among others.
