Dubai Cultural Council is also supporting the Festival and will help attract leading authors, poets and translators from the Arab World.

The inaugural festival will take place in Dubai between 25th February and 1st March 2009; the first event of its kind on this scale to be held in the Middle East.

EAIFL will be an annual event, bringing together people of all nationalities and cultures to celebrate literature and reading in all its forms.

EAIFL is directed by Isobel Abulhoul, Director of Magrudy's, the region's leading chain of bookshops, and Bill Samuel, Vice Chairman of London bookshop Foyles.

Isobel Abulhoul said: 'This festival is the first of its kind in the Middle East to provide a showcase for authors from the region, as well as bringing internationally bestselling writers to a new audience.

Headline Sponsor Emirates Airline has recognised the benefits of attracting a literary audience to Dubai by adding another important, cultural event to Dubai's burgeoning arts calendar.

Mike Simon, Emirates' Divisional Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, said: 'One of the roles of the airline, from its start-up, has been to promote Dubai as a tourist and commercial destination; we believe EAIFL will help strengthen the literary scene in Dubai, as well as attract visitors from all over the world'.

A key part of the festival will be Education Day. Some of the authors attending the festival are expected to give lectures or talks to students at universities, colleges and schools in Dubai.

Emirates Airline
Emirates is one of the world's most exciting airlines with a firmly established reputation for service excellence, innovation and industry firsts.

The carrier flies to six continents, non-stop from its hub in Dubai and recently launched Cape Town as its 100th destination.

At the same time, Emirates is setting the pace with its onboard offerings. In every class, the airline is adding value and comfort to the passenger experience - moves that have been recognised with more than 400 international awards.

With 114 modern, wide-bodied aircraft in the fleet, Emirates plans to more than double its size by 2012. By this time, it's expected to be the world's largest international airline and an increasingly powerful transcontinental brand.

Magrudy's
Magrudy's was established in Dubai in 1975 and has evolved to become the region's leading chain of book shops. Housing fiction and non-fiction titles in both Arabic and English, Magrudy's has eight bookshops in the UAE, runs franchise operations in Dubai Duty Free and Spinney's (the UAE's most successful supermarket chain) and is due to open in other Gulf countries soon. The company also runs a unique Educational Resource Centre for schools, teachers and libraries. Magrudy's has a long history of successfully hosting book readings and signings, showcasing authors such as Paolo Coelho, Francesca Simon and Ken Follett.

Foyles
Foyles was founded in 1903 by brothers William and Gilbert Foyle. The business has been on Charing Cross Road since 1906 and is still privately owned. As well as stocking books in fifty-six specialist subjects, Foyles contains an art gallery, a café and Ray's Jazz shop. The bookshop is known for its flourishing programme of events, and is often selected as the only port of call for many authors visiting from abroad. Other branches include London's Southbank Centre, Selfridges in London's Oxford Street and also Manchester Trafford, and most recently at St Pancras International, the terminal for High Speed 1 and Europe's grandest 'destination station'.
