According to Suhail Al Awadhi, Head of General Waste Unit at the Environment Department of the municipality, who also heads the Committee to Destroy Unwanted Goods, the destroyed goods included some 90,000 pirated DVDs, 2000 porn movies, 1000 bottles of whisky and 2110 bottles of beer.

He said the goods were bulldozed at the waste landfill in Al Muhaisinah in the presence of representatives of government bodies concerned, after legal steps were taken against those involved.

"Authorities in Dubai are taking every possible step to prevent piracy, pornography and the import and sale of counterfeit and low quality products in the emirate. However, some people are still trying to violate the law and get caught in the process," he said.

Meanwhile, Obeid Ibrahim Mohammed, Head of Administrative Services Section at Dubai Municipality, said civic inspectors belonging to the Security and Control Unit conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending. Last month, they caught 329 street vendors, and a total of 2,834 counterfeit products including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches that were fake international brands were confiscated. Also, some 2,519 DVDs with pirated films, 250 pornographic movies, 250 foodstuff items including boxes of fruits and vegetables were seized.

He urged the public to call Dubai Municipality's Emergency Office on 04-2232323 round-the-clock to report such illegal activities.
