Sharjah Economic Development Department presents its achievements

The Sharjah Economic Development Department has achieved a substantial increase in the number of trading licenses issued during the first quarter of the current year as compared to the correspondent period a year ago, H.E Ali Bin Salem Al Mahmoud, General Manager of the SEDD said.

He was speaking at the session held last week with Financial, Economic & Industrial Affairs Committee of Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) to discuss the economic policy of the emirate.

The session was attended by Nawal Askar, Nawal Askar, Deputy Director, Economic and Public Relations, Fahad Ahmed, Director on behalf of Registration and Licensing Department and the SCC delegation headed by Mr. Salem Obaid Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Committee and included a number of senior officials.

The SEDD's plans in providing facilities and incentives for investors were presented during the meeting with focus on flexible mechanisms adopted by the department which allows the emirate to attract more investment, and hence to further support its strategy of sustainable economic growth.

Al Mahmoud unveiled the SEDD's intention to launch a new licensing system, praising the cooperation of Dubai Municipality with the department in providing the technical support for this system.

Al Mahmoud explained the organizational structure of the department, the headquarter relation with its branches and the authorization given to each branch manager.

The smart management of the department provides some independence to branch offices to accelerate the decision making process and improve the skills of young national leaders.

The SEDD's effort to set up electronic link with government departments in the emirate was highlighted during the meeting.

Other issues of focus included the classification of trading activities process and the implementation of the national Uniform Commercial Register (UCR) project in coordination with Ministry of Economy.

Al Mahmoud briefed the delegation on the SEDD's initiatives to implement the directions of H.H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, regarding the protection of Arabic language.

The department has set and implemented certain measures to impose Arabic names of commercial premises to safeguard the Arab identity of the emirate.

Al Mahmoud expressed his pride as the Emiratisation rate in the department stands at 80 per cent, with high percentage of national women working in different branches and units of the ISO certified SEDD.
