Substantial controversy is simmering worldwide due to the increased energy demand associated with development requirements.

The significant increase in the demand for energy consumption and its subsequent impact on the environment and economy in the region necessitate the presence of continuously improving energy efficiency, conservation and management measures in order to check harmful CO2 emissions, reckoned to be the main cause of global warming.

To this end, Dr Abdullah Al Amiri, the Emirates Energy Award Chairman, said, "The continued increase in demand for energy consumption needs preemptive measures to be taken at different legislative, media, ecological, and economic levels in order to ensure a clean, healthy, eco-friendly future."

"Having reviewed the latest data released by different space research centres worldwide, I've discovered that earth temperatures have been steadily increasing for the past nine years, with scientists predicting a further 3°C increase in air temperature should the demand for energy continue at the current level."

"The growing demand for energy doesn't conflict with the attempts to rationalise energy consumption and put an end to excessive energy consumption patterns which fly in the face of our plans to comply with world energy standards applied in advanced world societies," he added.

Ecologists continue to warn that global warming is a grave danger that could ultimately trigger droughts and famines in different parts of the globe.

These warnings coincide with predictions of a sharp decline in seed production, which would leave around 400 million people around the globe victims to starvation and between 1.2 and 3 billion people with a shortage of drinking water, this in addition to the disappearance of one fifth of the world's quagmires.
