Egyptian winners are 'uniting the world through science' at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta, Georgia

During Intel ISEF, these students will be inspired by Nobel Laureates, academicians, and leading scientists and researchers from the city of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, and around the world.

Three Egyptian winning students of the Intel Egyptian Science and Engineering Fair (ESEF) that took place in Bibliotheca Alexandrina earlier this month will be competing at the ISEF this May along with around 1,500 other finalists from around the globe.

Their projects were chosen out of their pure diversity, novelty, and purpose.

One of the winners, Amira Badran, proposed a new application of the non Newtonian fluid as a bullet proof, causing any bullet coming in contact with it to be blocked from passing through.

Gina Gayed, another winner, participated in a trial to find a solution for Hepatitis C using stem cells technique.

And trio winners, Ahmed Tarek, Mahmoud Shibl, and Omar Ghorab, found a new escape mechanism for opening a car door when it is subjected to water pressure.

This is the culminating event for a network of science fairs held around the world.

These students have acquired skills in identifying and isolating important problems or questions; planning for the solution of problems or the answers to questions; using organized, logical thought and study to reach conclusions; and verbal and visual communication.

Students bring projects which represent many months, and sometime years, of concentrated research.

"Intel looks forward to this fair every year because it is such a wonderful opportunity for Egypt's young thinkers to show their work to a global audience," said Dr. Khaled Elamrawi, Intel General Manager, Egypt, Levant and North Africa.

"ISEF is part of Intel's World Ahead Program and highlights Intel's commitment to enhancing education around the world. It is through these types of initiatives that Intel works to improve teaching and learning through the effective use of technology, helping to advance mathematics, science, and engineering education and research".

Head of the ISEF Committee, Eng. Ahmed Nafei expressed his pride in the success of the fair as well, saying, "Launching of ESEF as a regional science fair that will be fed by local science fairs was our first step to achieve our mission of enhancing the study of science and engineering all over Egypt".

The young Egyptian winners were delighted at their victory and expressed excitement at being able to compete in the US with students from countries all around the globe.

"When I was working on my project I always hoped I would win. But winning and being able to compete again is such a fulfilling experience," says Amira Badran, one of the winners.

"I'm very happy that Intel has made the effort to put together a fair like this giving people like me, who are interested in science, the opportunity to show our creativity".

Ahmed Tarek, from the trio team which consisted of Mahmoud Shibl, and Omar Ghorab also expressed his gratitude saying, "We're so excited that our project won. We worked very hard together and we're so happy to get this opportunity to be winners and to compete again against so many other students from around the world".

Every year through ISEF, more than one million students from grades 9-12 in nearly 500 international science fairs around the world participate in 17 different scientific fields, where more than 1500 students from more than 40 countries win the chance to compete over $3m presented as scholarships and prizes.

Intel's education programs are customized to the needs of individual countries and they utilize an approach that focuses on building local competency for teacher training and technology innovation.
