Under the 25-year agreement, Empower will install eight district cooling stations at the development with a capacity of approximately 300,000 Refrigerated Tonnes (RT).

Farhan Faraidooni, Executive Chairman of Sama Dubai, said: "The agreement is an important step to ensure the efficient use of energy resources at 'The Lagoons'. By implementing a district cooling system, 'The Lagoons' will eliminate the use of ozone-depleting refrigerants, increase building efficiency and reduce demand on local power utilities by up to 30 per cent."

Faraidooni added Empower's excellent track record in delivering safe, reliable and environmental friendly district cooling solutions made it the obvious service provider of choice for 'The Lagoons'.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower said:

"The concept of district cooling has been adopted by several projects in Dubai. It is an effective and efficient system of air conditioning that can reduce the annual percentage of carbon dioxide emissions by about one tonne for every tonne of district cooling refrigeration demand served."

"Empower's district cooling technology at 'The Lagoons' will translate into reduced capital and operating costs. Residents will benefit from improved air quality, increased cooling capacity and cost savings resulting from lower electricity consumption and reduced maintenance."

Empower is a joint venture between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and TECOM Investments, a member of Dubai Holding.

The Lagoons' is being developed by Sama Dubai in an area adjacent to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. Protection of the environment is a key component of the development, which will have a large number of parks and green belts, and feature reduced density housing and building heights in the ecologically sensitive buffer zone.
