Sir Fiennes is climbing Mount Everest to raise funds for the UK based Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Thuraya supported this challenge with a range of telecom equipment and facilities allowing Sir Fiennes to stay in touch with his family and enabling him to send regular updates to his associates.

Thuraya is providing Sir Fiennes with a Thuraya DSL terminal for broadband communication, a Thuraya SO-2510 mobile hand-held, solar panels and Thuraya batteries.

With the equipment provided by Thuraya, Sir Fiennes is able to post photographs and text reports of his journey on his website as well as Youtube videos.

"Thuraya is very proud to be part of this endeavor that is being undertaken for the benefit of cancer patients. But more so is our capacity to provide uninterrupted telecom connectivity across 170 countries, all in urban, rural, remote and difficult terrain areas. Because we provide coverage on Mount Everest, Sir Fiennes is able to record his trip and emergency service is available at all times.

At Thuraya we believe we always have a vital role in enhancing communities where we operate around the world. By virtue of having a satellite system with ubiquitous coverage it allows us to help mountain climbers and adventurers achieve their aspirations," says Thuraya's Senior Manager Corporate Communications, Mr. Ebrahim K Ebrahim.

Through the Everest challenge, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be raising 3 million sterling pounds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care, a specialised cancer care organisation.

Over the past two months, Thuraya has partaken in other social projects, with the Company recently sponsoring Mr. Newton Jibunoh who traveled through the desert from Lagos to London to curb desertification.

Further, Thuraya is sponsoring a young team of cyclists Mr. Amiram Roth-Deblon and Ms. Ragna Schmidt-Haupt, who will be traveling through Africa this year to combat climate change.
