- PRESS RELEASE
SMART Technologies chose Cairo to hold the Global Education Technology Summit (GETS) for the first time in the Middle East and Africa on May 6-7, 2008.
Egypt's Minister of Education, Dr. Yousry Al Gamal, will deliver the opening speech of the summit's sessions which will mainly focus on means of improving education through the use of information and communication technology (ICT). The summit will also tackle issues of developing ICT policies to better serve education.
Other sessions of GETS 2008 will present the worlds' latest models of innovation in classroom technology as well as integrated solution strategies in learning and teaching models. The conference will also feature some success stories from Arab and African countries, in addition to two separate roundtable discussions for Africa and Middle East regions on the efforts and challenges of implementing ICT in education.
"Education authorities around the globe are adopting interactive whiteboards and other ICT tools to improve student learning outcomes and develop skills that are vitally important for a 21st-century global workforce," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART's CEO. "GETS 2008 in Cairo will provide an excellent forum to discuss ways to strengthen education in the Middle East and Africa."
The first GETS conference was held in Canada in 2006. In March 2008 the conference was held for the first time outside Canada in Frankfurt. SMART Technologies decided to bring GETS to the Middle East and Africa due to the great development witnessed in the regions' ICT industry as well as the need to develop and improve education through more effective use of ICT in the classroom.
