Intel calls for increased focus on Africa

Following Intel Chairman s visit to Kigali, Rwanda last year during ITU's Telecom Africa, John Davies, Intel Vice President, Sales and Marketing Group & General Manager, Intel World Ahead Program will be visiting Cairo to give a keynote speech at this year's ITU Telecom Africa, taking place in Cairo on May 12th - 15th, as part of Intel's ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and their work with local markets and the government.
Intel has been focused on several projects across the region, with initiatives running from Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Algiers, South Africa all the way to Nigeria.
The company's goal is to provide opportunities for people worldwide to participate in today's global economy through information and communications technologies - supporting substantial progress in connecting the next billion people to a world of opportunity.
"ITU Telecom Africa provides an excellent forum for business leaders and governments to discuss pertinent topics including WiMAX technology and deployments in Africa and worldwide," says Davies. "The Intel World Ahead Program is instrumental in helping to develop ICT in key African markets, and at ITU Telecom Africa we are right in the center of rich debate and many of the ideas that will help shape the future of ICT in this region".
In collaboration with local and worldwide organizations and companies, Intel is working to enable communities by bringingin know-how, education programs and holistic IT solutions customized for people's local needs.
Some of these programs include developing full-featured PCs for first-time computer users and customized PCs to meet special needs of geographical regions and market segments, extending WiMAX technology and deployments worldwide, and collaborating with local governments and organizations on digital-inclusion programs.
On a global level, Intel is also working at training 10 million teachers on the effective use of technology in education, and donating 100,000 PCs to classrooms in developing communities to promote the effective use of technology for improved learning.
"Intel is committed to help bridge the digital divide in Africa," says Dr. Khaled Elamrawi, Intel Country Manager, ELN. "Egypt is a prime example of how public-private partnerships and collaboration with NGOs are helping to enable digital accessibility, education and connectivity to communities at large".
This year's ITU Telecom Africa will unite key stakeholders from the region and beyond alongside Intel, in showcasing ICTs in Africa: A Continent on the Move.
The forum itself will be focusing on innovation, and a wealth of information on ICT-related topics for informative debates.
The event promises a concentration of government, private sector actors and leading thinkers negotiating and debating the industry's most innovative technologies and its most significant issues.
This year's ITU forum will also bring to light the latest insight on Africa's position, its unique market drivers, and the host of factors critical in sustaining its level of capability.
