Margie Hawthorn, a mathematics teacher at the Al Sahwa School, and Lloyd Clark, a science teacher at ABA, an IB World School in Oman, are the first teachers from the Middle East to have been selected for the Honeywell Educators @ Space. Their selection followed a rigorous application process involving more than 1,000 competing teachers from around the world.

"I am sure I will value the experience at the Space Academy for the rest of my life," said Hawthorn, who has been a teacher for the last 15 years. "For the past few years, I have been encouraging the investigative method of study through cross-curricular activities such as 'mathematics with technology' and 'mathematics with art'. The interesting and exciting activities planned during the program are sure to give me a glimpse into a whole new world of opportunities for my students."

"It is important to make science as interesting and as relevant to students as possible," said Clark, a science teacher for more than 32 years.
"If the subject matter catches the imagination of the students, then the learning process is much more enjoyable. The Honeywell Space Academy program will be a unique opportunity to spend time with like-minded educators, which is sure to inspire some new creative lessons for my students and enhance my presentation of science as a subject."

During the program, each educator will participate in a variety of activities including 50 hours of classroom, laboratory and field training. They will also have the unique opportunity to participate in astronaut training exercises including a high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space missions, land and water survival training and a state-of-the-art flight dynamics program.

"We at Honeywell believe teachers are instrumental in inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians," said Larry Perkins, regional general manager for Honeywell Process Solutions Middle East. "Through the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy Program, we provide teachers with an engaging and intellectually stimulating experience, as well as a host of curriculum plans and materials to bring science to life in their classrooms once they return."
