Company employees and workers from its various departments and sections located in Jebel Ali Free Zone took part in the campaign, which was held in cooperation with the Blood Bank in the Ministry of Health's Al Wasl Hospital and the Thalassemia Centre.

The day started with senior management officials of DP World's UAE region, Dubai World's flagship marine terminal operator, donating blood and encouraging their colleagues to take part in the campaign.

The aim was to spread awareness about the significance of this humanitarian initiative, and help alleviate the suffering of Thalassemia patients and improve their lives.

Employees converged on the blood donation centre and extended their full cooperation and support for this noble cause.

Mr. Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director- DP World's UAE region, said: "DP World is deeply committed to its corporate social responsibility and unwavering support for the well-being of our society. It is our endeavour to support initiatives that are meant to alleviate the suffering of our fellow human beings. It is out of this concern that we dedicated one full day to collecting blood donations and spreading awareness among the employees about the need to step up the fight against Thalassemia and save the lives of the patients.

"This blood donation day marks the beginning of a long-term initiative to be launched by DP World's UAE region to spread awareness about Thalassemia and provide help and support for the patients in every possible way - an initiative that will become an integral part of the company's strategy to support the most pressing issues of our society in the coming years," he added.

Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder, is a highly prevalent disease in the UAE.

Official statistics reveals that one out of every 12 UAE nationals suffers from Thalassemia.

Blood donations are critically important as Thalassemia patients depend on regular blood transfusions every 2-3 weeks to raise the level of iron in their blood in order to live and function normally.
