WFP Executive Director to participate in World Economic Forum, Egypt

The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Josette Sheeran, will travel to Egypt on 18-19 May to take part in the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Sheeran will participate in a panel on 19 May entitled 'Does Arab Business Care' which will discuss private sector involvement and financial implications of global issues such as climate change, water shortages and high food prices.

She will also attend an Al Arabiya TV debate entitled 'The Gathering Storm of Inflation' which will discuss Gulf Arab countries' record inflation, the dollar peg policy, rent increases and government spending, amid increasing commodity prices.

Sheeran became the eleventh Executive Director of WFP in April 2007. Before joining the UN food agency, she served as Under Secretary for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs at the United States Department of State.

Sheeran has a 20-year proven track record as a management leader as well as international experience in diplomacy, government, foundations, economic capacity building, and business.

In 2006, she was appointed by Secretary-General Annan to the High-level UN Panel on System-wide Coherence.
