- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, May 15 - 2008 at 13:24
- PRESS RELEASE
The Rail Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently awarded the contractor DURL for their outstanding achievements marked by the progress of the Dubai Metro.
The divisions awarded were the viaducts, the environment protection and the heavy equipments.
Mr. Adnan Al Hammadi, Rail Constructions Director, said, "The success on this massive project would not be attained without the diligent and conscientious effort of various departments within DURL. I would like to extend my special gratitude to three sections today, which include the viaduct construction, plant and heavy equipments and the environment protection. All these three sections have played a vital role especially in terms of safety during construction. Paving way for the Metro in this busy emirate of Dubai by causing minimal inconvenience in terms of noise, and pollution is a challenge by itself and we are proud of the progress achieved in such a short span."
Commencing from Jebel Ali Industrial along Sheikh Zayed Road to Karama one can see a long stretch of viaducts where all of the nine Launching Gantries work continuously across various sections along this massive stretch. Currently around 80% of the viaduct construction is completed in less than two years.
The environment protection section takes necessary precautions to protect the environment during construction.
Regular studies are undertaken to study the effect of construction activities on the environment on short and long term basis. Environmental audits are conducted to determine the level of environmental performance attained by the contractor, and sub-contractors, across the sites currently under construction including rail stations, sections of track, and depots are conducted regularly.
The Metro project has one of the biggest cranes in the world working on the project at Union Square. To complement this crane and other huge cranes are three tunnel boring machines shipped from Japan that have tunneled the Red Line and are currently tunneling the Green Line. Other machinery includes nine Launching Gantries, D- Wall cutters etc. The plant and heavy equipments section is responsible for the assembly, dismantling and safe transfer of the machinery from one site to the other as required along with maintenance.
