Sharaf DG won the awards in Store Concept of the Year and Best Retailer for Marketing/Promotion categories with 51% and 43% of the votes respectively.
Carrefour was voted the Hypermarket/Big Box Retailer of the Year with 37% of the votes while NR Ganesh of Carrefour was voted the Retail Executive of the Year with 36% of the votes.
In addition, i2 won the Best Mall-based/Specialist Retailer of the Year award.
'The inaugural Middle East Retail Academy Awards, held in conjunction with DCC, were a huge success,' said Farouk Hemraj, CEO and co-founder of DISTREE Events. 'This was the first time that live electronic voting has been used to determine the winners of channel awards in this region. This transparent and fair voting system was a huge hit with all the attendees.'
In the vendor categories, HP was voted the Best Overall Retail Vendor of the Year with 32% of the votes cast by 130 attending retailers.
Wael El Chami, Retail Account Manager for HP also won the retailer vote for Best Retail Channel Manager with 31% of the votes on the night.
The second main winner in the vendor category was HTC which was voted Best Retail Vendor of the Year for Mobile Phones and also received the Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Channel Development awarded to new vendors.
Other winners in the vendor categories include Dell for Retail vendor of the Year-Desktop/Notebooks; Apple for Retail vendor of the Year-Peripherals; Genius as Retail vendor of the Year-Accessories; and Samsung, which was voted Retail Vendor of the Year-LCD/Plasma TVs.
Redington picked up the Best Retail Distributor of the Year award.
Hemraj added, 'The feedback for the Middle East Retail Academy Awards was overwhelmingly positive but we plan to refine and develop the concept for next year. This will see the introduction of country-specific awards for fast-growing markets such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt. We will take careful note of the feedback we have received and strive to continuously improve the awards format and structure.'
Live voting decides winners for inaugural Middle East Retail Academy Awards
Sharaf DG and Carrefour UAE won two awards each in the Retailer categories voted live by representatives from more than 50 vendors that attended the special award dinner hosted by Digital Consumer Channel Middle East & Africa (DCC MEA) at Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah.
