Sharjah bans smoking

The UAE emirate of Sharjah has announced a ban on smoking in public places that will begin on June 1, reported Khaleej Times. Violators of the ban will receive fines of Dhs1,000 ($272) for individuals and Dhs10,000 to Dhs20,000 for establishments like hotels and salons that allow smoking. Signboards will be placed in public areas where smoking is banned along with a phone number on which people can report a violation.
